On a new phone, sign into the same intended Teams account and organization before diagnosing missing chats or files. Personal Teams and an employer’s Teams environment can use different identities and access requirements.
Identify the account you actually use
Write down whether you use a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account, the account address and the expected organization. Keep passwords and verification codes private. A similar display name is not sufficient evidence that the new phone opened the same account.
Microsoft’s work Teams sign-in guide describes installing the mobile app and signing in with the Microsoft 365 account. It also notes that organizations may require additional verification. Those work-account instructions should not be generalized into a claim that every personal Teams user needs an enterprise license.
The separate Teams Free account guide covers personal Microsoft accounts and its supported sign-in options. Use the instructions for your environment.
Prepare verification before retiring the old phone
- Confirm access to the account’s existing sign-in and recovery methods.
- If your employer manages access, check its device enrollment and authentication instructions.
- Install Teams through the official route.
- Sign in and check both the account address and organization.
- Open an expected conversation and a permitted file before declaring setup complete.
Installing Teams is not a transfer of every authenticator entry, downloaded file or organization permission. Keep the old device available until the new sign-in is confirmed. Ask your IT team about a failed verification challenge rather than trying to circumvent its controls.
Check each missing item separately
| Missing item | Useful first question |
|---|---|
| An entire organization | Is this the account that belongs to it? |
| A particular file | Does this identity have access to the original shared location? |
| A local download | Was it a separate file saved on the old device? |
| A sign-in approval | Which authentication method is the organization expecting? |
Should I create another account to restore old access?
A new identity does not establish the memberships of the old one. First compare the account and organization with your existing working session, then ask the relevant administrator about access.
What should support receive?
Provide the Android version, app version, account type and exact message, with private addresses and file contents removed where unnecessary. State whether sign-in still works on another device. An installation failure belongs to a different troubleshooting path: see our APK installation guide.
This documentation-based guide does not claim a completed migration test. See the Android app guide directory for further setup help.
Check the official download and Android support before sign-in
Microsoft download and support requirements reviewed 21 October 2026.
Microsoft’s mobile download guide links to its download route and Google Play. On a work-managed phone, use the distribution instructions approved by your organization. A copied app name or a third-party APK offer is not equivalent evidence of source.
The Teams client requirements describe Android support as the latest four major Android versions. The personal-use requirements describe the same rolling OS window. Recheck the current policy and the store’s result on your device; this is not a permanent minimum Android number.
| Failure stage | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| App unavailable or cannot update | Android version, current store message and official support policy |
| App installs but organization sign-in fails | Account type, organization and redacted authentication message |
| A particular work file is missing | Original shared location and access granted to this identity |
An installer accepting a file does not establish ongoing Microsoft support, and a supported Android version does not grant an organization membership. Keep those two checks separate. Do not repeatedly try older APKs to work around an organization’s access requirements.
Also distinguish a phone/tablet app from dedicated Teams Rooms or Teams-certified desk devices. Requirements for those products should not be used as the support policy for an ordinary Android phone.
