Start with the exact file and error when Acrobat cannot open a PDF on Android. Distinguish opening a local downloaded file from accessing a document through an email or cloud link. Changing PDF apps does not automatically change access to the original source.
Identify the document you actually opened
Record the filename, approximate size, download source and error. A filename ending in .pdf is not enough to establish that the download completed or that it contains the intended document. Keep the original message or authorized source link available so you can compare the expected file.
Adobe’s mobile file-opening guide distinguishes file sources including the device and connected storage. Follow the route for the file’s actual location rather than instructions meant for a different platform or desktop browser.
Use a comparison that answers one question
- Try a small, non-sensitive PDF you already know is valid.
- If that opens, focus on the affected document or its source.
- If the affected item is a link, check that the expected account can access its original location.
- When permitted, obtain a fresh complete copy from the original source.
- Open that copy from the location where it was saved and record the result.
These are suggested diagnostic checks, not reported test results. Do not upload private documents to an unknown “PDF repair” site merely to see whether it can open them.
Match the symptom to the next check
| Symptom | Next question |
|---|---|
| The file cannot be found | Where was it saved, and is it actually on this device? |
| The source asks for sign-in | Is the intended authorized account selected? |
| The document asks for a password | Can the sender supply the legitimate opening credentials? |
| Only one document fails | Can the sender provide a fresh PDF or confirm its intended format? |
Opening and editing are different capabilities
Do not infer a paid editing requirement from a generic opening failure. Check the precise action and current product guidance. Adobe’s Android help is the appropriate starting point for mobile features; many general Acrobat tutorials describe desktop controls.
Once the PDF opens: viewing and sharing checks
This section was reviewed against Adobe mobile documentation on 21 October 2026; no physical-device test is claimed.
First confirm that the intended document opens locally, then decide whether the recipient needs a shared link or a separate PDF copy. A readable file on your phone and permission to open its shared link are different checks. Changing the display mode does not repair missing file contents or grant cloud access.
Choose a reading view on Android
Adobe’s Android viewing-mode instructions describe opening the PDF, selecting More options, then View settings. Choose Continuous for scrolling through pages, Single page for one page at a time, or Reading Mode for enlarged text. Adobe notes that Reading Mode is not compatible with every PDF. If a mode is unavailable or the layout is unsuitable, return to another supported view instead of assuming the document is corrupt.
Choose between a link and a file copy
| What you send | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Shared document link | The intended recipient can access that shared item and has the intended viewing or commenting permission. |
| Separate PDF copy | The attachment is the intended version and contains the pages you meant to send. A static copy is separate from the shared-review workflow. |
| Screenshot of a page | It shows only the captured view; it is not the full original PDF. Use it only when that limited result meets the recipient’s need. |
In Adobe’s mobile sharing guide, open the PDF and select Share, inspect Link access, and choose the appropriate audience and allowed actions before applying the selection. Then choose an invitation or link-sharing route. Do not broaden the audience merely to remove a recipient’s access error; confirm the correct invited account or organization with the document owner first.
If you are authorized to distribute a separate file, Adobe’s Send a copy instructions describe opening the shared PDF, choosing Share, then Send a copy in the sharing dialog and completing the chosen sharing workflow. Adobe describes this as a static version. Keep its version and purpose clear so it is not confused with the ongoing shared document.
Check the recipient’s actual failure
- Establish whether they received a link or an attachment. Ask for the error without requesting passwords or private document contents.
- For a link, check the intended account and the owner’s access settings.
- For an attachment, compare filename, version and whether the transfer completed. Ask for a fresh authorized copy if appropriate.
- After the intended access is confirmed, check that the expected pages can be viewed. Commenting or editing is a separate permission or capability.
For cloud-hosted documents, our Google Drive upload and shared-link guide explains another common source of account-dependent access. Keep the original document available while diagnosing either workflow.
Should I rename or reinstall?
Renaming a file does not recreate missing document contents. Before reinstalling, establish whether the problem affects all PDFs or just one source. Keep important local documents and account recovery information accessible before any data-removing action.
What information should I send the document owner?
Share the error, phone/app versions and whether another known PDF opens. Ask for a fresh authorized copy when appropriate. Avoid sending the document publicly if it contains personal or business information.
