Android app archiving removes app software while retaining its icon and data; uninstalling is a different removal decision. If you expect to use an app again, first check whether archiving is supported and whether it can still be restored from its app store.

What archiving changes

Google’s archiving guide says archiving removes software, permissions and temporary files and stops notifications while keeping app data and an icon. Restoration requires the supporting store to remain installed and the app to remain available there. Some documented steps require Android 15 or supported hardware. Do not assume every sideloaded app has the same archive option.

Before freeing storage

  1. Identify important local work, downloads and account recovery requirements.
  2. Check the app’s own export or backup guidance and verify that the copy can be accessed.
  3. Confirm the source you would use to reinstall or restore the app.
  4. Read the exact Android action label before confirming.

Keeping data through an archive is not the same as having an independent backup. Store availability and access can change. For important work, document a recovery route rather than relying on a faded icon as your only evidence.

How to archive and restore a supported app

Google documents Settings → Apps → the app → Archive for manual archiving. To restore, select the faded icon and follow the reinstall prompt; supported App info and store pages can also offer restoration. The phone may require you to free enough space first. Consult the current Google instructions if those controls are absent.

Does archiving cancel a paid subscription?

Do not use an installation action as evidence that billing has stopped. Review the subscription with the store or service where it was purchased, using that provider’s current cancellation instructions.

Should I uninstall to fix an APK update conflict?

Diagnose the conflict first. Read our signature mismatch and data checks guide before removing an installed app. For unrelated failures, use installation troubleshooting.

The useful final check is whether you recovered space and still have a realistic route back to the app and its important work. This guide is documentation-based and does not report a physical-device archive test. Browse Android app guides for related help.
